The National Institute of Informatics (NII) is pleased to invite participation in the “Medium-Scale Proof of Concept for the Next-Generation Authentication Infrastructure: IAL2 and AAL2 Operations” as outlined below. We sincerely welcome participation from those actively involved in the operation of IdP (Identity Providers) and SP (Service Providers).
- Overview
Since 2009, the National Institute of Informatics (NII) has provided the “GakuNin” academic authentication federation to support secure authentication not only for services within individual universities but also for services across collaborating universities and commercial services. This system is increasingly essential as academic institutions require enhanced security measures to manage high-value information, computational services, and to support remote work environments.
In response to requests from participating institutions, NII has been working to develop an advanced next-generation authentication infrastructure. This will feature robust multi-factor authentication and a higher level of identity verification, ensuring a higher level of security for academic and other collaborative services.
This project aims to implement and test ID management and service operation for IAL2 and AAL2 levels of security. Building on previous proof-of-concept work, we are now expanding to a medium-scale proof of concept. The goal is to evaluate whether the current standards for next-generation authentication infrastructure can be operationalized, focusing on both security rigor and user convenience.
Specifically, the project will investigate the following:
For IdPs (Identity Providers): Implementation of more stringent identity verification methods, including the transmission of attributes related to IAL2 and AAL2 levels.
For SPs (Service Providers): Sending authentication requests at the AAL2 level, receiving and validating transmitted attributes corresponding to IAL2 and AAL2.
Through this initiative, we hope to advance the development of the next-generation authentication infrastructure by leveraging the technical support of GakuNin and promoting information exchange among participating institutions.
We would be delighted to have you join us in this important endeavor. Even if your primary interest is gathering information, we welcome your participation.
